Junk Food

Read a local news from the Star Online (thestar.com.my), not only for those students, it’s a severe issue among adults as well:
“HEALTH Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai announced on Sunday that effective immediately the body mass index (BMI) of students would be listed on their report cards, and unhealthy foods and drinks would be banned from school canteens.
This was in response to data indicating that around 1.7 million, or 30%, of Malaysians are overweight, with another 30% considered obese.
Obesity is an associated risk factor for many chronic, non-communicable diseases, including diabetes (which is being detected more and more in younger Malaysians), heart disease and hypertension (high blood pressure).
Banning soft drinks and food with high sugar content from the school canteen is an excellent idea. However, this is an old issue, one that keeps popping up periodically over the years.
The guidelines from the ministries are there, but let’s face facts. First, canteen operators are business people, and kids love unhealthy foods; and second, enforcement is quite lax.
Our Government is concerned over our growing waistlines no doubt, and there are the committees and policies to prove it.
But all the best policies in the world will not help if there is no strict enforcement, especially when the change is difficult – you try convincing most kids that a piece of fruit is better than fried chicken nuggets!
And as we all know, banning unhealthy food from the school canteen will be fairly useless if students can just run outside the school gate to buy them from streetside vendors.
Controlling one’s diet is also just half the battle.
Some other ways to help solve this problem could be for parents to ensure that their kids have breakfast before leaving for school (yes, we are aware that it’s almost impossible to wake some kids up, but you are the parent), packing them healthy food for recess, and reducing their allowance so that they do not have the money to spend on junk food in the first place.
But kids just need to be taught right by their families, because once they are in school, what they eat is their own choice.
And enforcing a healthy diet in school will not help if parents are indulging those fast food and high calorie requests regularly."

Good Friday

According to the accounts in the Gospels, the Temple Guards, guided by Jesus' disciple Judas Iscariot, arrested Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Judas received money (30 pieces of silver) (Matthew 26:14-16) for betraying Jesus and told the guards that whomever he kisses is the one they are to arrest. Following his arrest, Jesus is brought to the house of Annas, who is the father-in-law of the high priest, Caiaphas. There he is interrogated with little result and sent bound to Caiaphas the high priest where the Sanhedrin had assembled (John 18:1-24).
Conflicting testimony against Jesus is brought forth by many witnesses, to which Jesus answers nothing. Finally the high priest adjures Jesus to respond under solemn oath, saying "I adjure you, by the Living God, to tell us, are you the Anointed One, the Son of God?" Jesus testifies in the affirmative, "You have said it, and in time you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Almighty, coming on the clouds of Heaven." The high priest condemns Jesus for blasphemy, and the Sanhedrin Trial of Jesus concurs with a sentence of death (Matthew 26:57-66). Peter, waiting in the courtyard, also denies Jesus three times to bystanders while the interrogations were proceeding just as Jesus had predicted.
In the morning, the whole assembly brings Jesus to the Roman governor Pontius Pilate under charges of subverting the nation, opposing taxes to Caesar, and making himself a king (Luke 23:1-2). Pilate authorizes the Jewish leaders to judge Jesus according to their own law and execute sentencing; however, the Jewish leaders reply that they are not allowed by the Romans to carry out a sentence of death (John 18:31).
Pilate questions Jesus and tells the assembly that there is no basis for sentencing. Upon learning that Jesus is from Galilee, Pilate refers the case to the ruler of Galilee, King Herod, who was in Jerusalem for the Passover Feast. Herod questions Jesus but receives no answer; Herod sends Jesus back to Pilate. Pilate tells the assembly that neither he nor Herod have found guilt in Jesus; Pilate resolves to have Jesus whipped and released (Luke 23:3-16). Under the guidance of the chief priests, the crowd asks for Barabbas, who had been imprisoned for committing murder during an insurrection. Pilate asks what they would have him do with Jesus, and they demand, "Crucify him" (Mark 15:6-14). Pilate's wife had seen Jesus in a dream earlier that day, and she forewarns Pilate to "have nothing to do with this righteous man" (Matthew 27:19). Pilate has Jesus flogged and then brings him out to the crowd to release him. The chief priests inform Pilate of a new charge, demanding Jesus be sentenced to death "because he claimed to be God's son." This possibility filled Pilate with fear, and he brought Jesus back inside the palace and demanded to know from where he came (John 19:1-9).
Coming before the crowd one last time, Pilate declares Jesus innocent and washed his own hands in water to show he has no part in this condemnation. Nevertheless, Pilate hands Jesus over to be crucified in order to forestall a riot (Matthew 27:24-26) and ultimately to keep his job. The sentence written is "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." Jesus carries his cross to the site of execution (assisted by Simon of Cyrene), called the place of the Skull, or "Golgotha" in Hebrew and in Latin "Calvary". There he is crucified along with two criminals (John 19:17-22).
Jesus agonizes on the cross for six hours. During his last 3 hours on the cross, from noon to 3 p.m., darkness falls over the whole land. With a loud cry, Jesus gives up his spirit. There is an earthquake, tombs break open, and the curtain in the Temple is torn from top to bottom. The centurion on guard at the site of crucifixion declares, "Truly this was God's Son!" (Matthew 27:45-54)
Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Sanhedrin and secret follower of Jesus, who had not consented to his condemnation, goes to Pilate to request the body of Jesus (Luke 23:50-52). Another secret follower of Jesus and member of the Sanhedrin named Nicodemus brought about a hundred pound weight mixture of spices and helped wrap the body of Christ (John 19:39-40). Pilate asks confirmation from the centurion whether Jesus is dead (Mark 15:44). A soldier pierced the side of Jesus with a lance causing blood and water to flow out (John 19:34), and the centurion informs Pilate that Jesus is dead (Mark 15:45).
Joseph of Arimathea took Jesus' body, wrapped it in a clean linen shroud, and placed it in his own new tomb that had been carved in the rock (Matthew 27:59-60) in a garden near the site of crucifixion. Nicodemus (John 3:1) also brought 75 pounds of myrrh and aloes, and placed them in the linen with the body, in keeping with Jewish burial customs (John 19:39-40). They rolled a large rock over the entrance of the tomb (Matthew 27:60). Then they returned home and rested, because Shabbat had begun at sunset (Luke 23:54-56). On the third day, Sunday, which is now known as Easter Sunday (or Pascha), Jesus rose from the dead.

Five People You Meet in Heaven

I enjoyed this book overall. I'd recommend it to anyone.

This is a story about a man named Eddie and it begins at the end, with Eddie dying in the sun. It might seem strange to start a story with an ending. But all endings are also beginnings. We just don't know it at the time.
The writer guesses that you will meet five people, after your death, in heaven. These persons have had an important role in your life. Sometimes you know the persons, sometimes you don’t. They will give you a better view of your own life, they will explain your life more clearly and they will explain why things have happened.

Plant a Tree Plant a Hope

Trees play a vital role in the world. Trees absorb dioxide and turn it into oxygen. The natural carbon dioxide cycle keeps a balance in the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere. But humans actions and behaviors cause changes which upset this natural balance.
The creation of too many greenhouse gases cause an imbalance with heat being trapped in the earth’s atmosphere, increasing the overall average temperature resulting in global warming.
Planting tree is one of the most effective ways to offset our carbon emissions, as well as beautifying an area.
Below are steps to plant a seedling:
  • Select a planting location that receives six or more hours of direct sunlight per day for "full sun" trees or a location that receives four to six hours of direct sunlight per day for "partial sun" trees. Make sure to choose a location that also provides well-draining soil.
  • Dig a hole wide and deep enough to cover the root system.
  • Handle seedlings by the base of the stem, taking care not to bruise the bark.
  • Lay the roots straight down the hole in a natural arrangement. Do not bunch, spiral, double-over or bend roots.
  • Keep stones and twigs out of the hole (they create air pockets that dry out roots).
  • Plant seedlings slightly above the root collar swelling.
  • Cover with soil. Do not bury live branches or foliage, or leave any roots exposed to the air.
  • Tamp soil firmly with toe (not the heel) to remove air pockets.
  • Create a mulched area around the tree that is 50 percent larger than the spread of the branches and five to 10 centimetres deep. Wood chips or shredded pine or cedar bark are great mulch, as are oak leaves and pine needles.
  • Water your tree generously after planting to ensure that the soil around its roots system is thoroughly moistened. Continue to provide regular supplemental irrigation for your tree to keep the soil consistently moist until the tree has established itself in its new location.
Without trees, there would be no life on this planet!

The Power of Dream

"There are people who put their dreams in a little box and say 'Yes, I've got dreams, of course, I've got dreams.' Then they put the box away and bring it out once in a while to look in it, and yep, they're still there. These are great dreams, but they never even get out of the box." - Erma Bombeck

If you can dream it, you can have it. According to the law of attraction, as you continue to dream of your ideal life, you are creating and attracting the circumstance and moving things to be reality. Here I have chosen a list of 12 quotes to be share with you:

1.       We all work with one infinite power
2.       Whatever is going on in your mind is what you are attracting
3.       Thoughts that bring about good feelings mean you are on the right track. Thoughts that bring about bad feelings means you are not on the right track
4.       Play the picture in your mind – focus on the end result
5.       VISUALIZE! Rehearse your future
6.       We are the creators of our universe
7.       Treat yourself the way you want to be treated by others. Love yourself and you will be loved
8.       No one else can think or feel for you. It is you, ONLY YOU
9.       Thank the universe for your own healing. Laugh, stress free happiness will keep you healthy
10.    Thoughts = creation. If these thoughts are attached to powerful emotions (good or bad) that speeds the creation
11.    When the voice and vision on the inside become more profound and clear than the opinions on the outside, then you have mastered your life
12.    All of this abundance begins to shine through a mind that is aware of it’s own infinite nature. There’s enough for everyone. See it. Believe it. It will show up for you.

Once you apply, nothing is impossible.

Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover

Hi buddies, share you a story:

A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband, dressed in a homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the train in Boston and walk timidly without an appointment into the Harvard University President's outer office.

The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard University and probably didn't even deserve to be in Cambridge University.

"We want to see the president," the man said softly.
"He'll be busy all day," the secretary snapped.

"We'll wait," the lady replied.

For hours the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. They didn't and the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb the president, even though it was a chore she always regretted.

"Maybe if you see them for a few minutes, they'll leave," she said to him.

He sighed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn't have the time to spend with them, but he detested gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering up his outer office.

The president, stern faced and with dignity, strutted toward the couple.

The lady told him, "We had a son who attended Harvard University for one year. He loved Harvard University and he was happy here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. My husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on campus."

The president wasn't touched.... He was shocked.

"Madam," he said, gruffly, "we can't put up a statue for every person who attended Harvard University and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery."

"Oh, no," the lady explained quickly. "We don't want to erect a statue. We thought we would like to give a building to Harvard University."

The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit, and then exclaimed, "A building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars in the physical buildings here at Harvard University."
For a moment the lady was silent.

The president was pleased. Maybe he could get rid of them now.

The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, "Is that all it costs to start a university? Why don't we just start our own?"

Her husband nodded.

The president's face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford got up and walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California where they established the University that bears their name, Stanford University, a memorial to a son that Harvard University no longer cared about.

End.

This is called prejudice, and often leads to discrimination. Unfortunately in our society those “beautiful” ones often gain unfair advantages, and the worst part is some of the people discriminate against those who may not be as appealing to eyes. Never judge people by using your eye but with your heart instead.
